The Dodo award was the brainchild of Marshall Gibbs (as shown) who at the time sailed the Diamond ''Corsair III''.
Marshall noticed that some of the Diamond sailors (including himself) can do some really stupid things at times!
And in recognition of stupidity the Dodo Awards were born.
Just to give a brief example what the Dodo Award has been won for previously:
A boat was sailing out to the start line, now remember diamonds don't have a motor.
The boat sailed out of the yacht club's harbour which is about 300 metres long and not until then, they realised they left the mainsail on the jetty.
Another member bought a diamond that was located 40 nm away and had a tiny outboard fitted.
A collection of "experienced" diamond sailors helped him bring it back to Williamstown.
Approx. 4-5 slabs were loaded on-board and departure was executed. Within 4 hours everyone was pretty drunk... run out of fuel... and had run aground!
Lots of paddling required. Only half way home, fuel, more beer and rum was organised and the boat arrived home in the dark a good 12 hours after original departure with half the crew literally legless and unable to speak.
Racing around channel markers one boat caught it's mast on the cage at the top of the channel marker.
An opposition boat had a hearty laugh with lots of verbals and proceeded to do exactly the same thing at the next mark!
